Make up drawer challenge

Today's entry is to show you this great achievement of organizing and purging my make up drawer.

It was practically a mess, completeley packed with stuff that didn't even belong to that category, and that I allowed the clutter to grow during almost a year. Let me give you an example of how messy it was: I happened to find a credit card that I thought I had shredded! I actually canceled the credit card because I thought it was lost forever and nope! There it was, hidden among so many other things.

Here's a bigger pic of the "before"

Ashaming, I must admit :(

How could I live with a mess like this for almost twelve months?

Well, let me tell you it was not that terribly messy until several months ago (but still it was messy)  and also, I think it was because amidst the chaos, everything I use on a daily basis was somehow accessible, so I manage to survive.

Of course, as days passed by it was harder to find many of these things, and of course the rest of my make up, was practically unused, because it was all mixed up with other stuff.

I was also aware that so much of what was in there, that belonged to the "make up category" was already due and there where other things that I knew I was never going to use  again. Eg. Eyeshadows of many colors I dont like to wear.  So, it was time to purge. I knew it, my heart could sense it  ;P

Well, in order to do this, I went through the following process:
1) I took EVERYTHING out of the drawer and put it on the floor (actually I took the drawer out of the dresser for making things easier) Yes, this sounds a bit like Marie Kondo

2) I went through each and every item (I know this sounds much like Marie Kondo too) so I could decide whether I wanted to keep it or not
Note: I didn't precisely asked myself if it brought me joy, but rather something similar and in my opinion, a bit more practical:

  • DoI use it? (Frequently)
  • Do I need it? (It should be a present and real need, not a possible future need, although I have to confess I still struggle with this and I did keep some items"just in case)
  • Do I love it? (Ok, maybe this is kinda similar to the "brings me joy" question)

After I finished this process, I began sorting by subcategory what ended up on my keep pile. E.g. Mascaras, eyeliners, eyeshadows, etc. so I could see how much space each subcategory could take up inside the drawer, fitting in smaller containers.

What I decided for this time,  is to try to have everything visible at a glance, so by just opening the drawer I could see what I have, and make the most and the best use of these items (otherwise, Out of side, out of mind)

So, it took me some time (it is actually what took me the most) to check where to put everything so it could be organized accordingly: all visible, yet efficient. Items had to fit in the smaller containers (I used small boxes and cases I already had at home) and containers had to fit within the drawer, PLUS items had to be easy to retrieve and put away. The most used items being more accesible.

I ended up with this (let me give you a closer and more detailed look)

Voilà! I have my make up drawer organized and back on track again!!

What's left? I have to deal with everyting that will be donated, and I will have to deal (purge, sort, contain, etc) everything that belonged to another category and was left out of today's process.  I will put in in a small box and schedule it for another day within this week.

By the moment, it has been all for today 😀

Take care!!

Alorsie
